We have the opportunity to personally support a black woman for Clackamas County Judge. A meet-and-greet and fundraiser will be held on Tuesday, July 31, from 5:30-7:30 pm for Judge Ulanda Watkins. For more about Judge Watkins – keep reading…
Governor Brown appointed Judge Ulanda Watkins to the Clackamas County Circuit Court bench in July of last year. Judge Watkins' appointment was a significant moment in the effort to see that Oregon's bench reflects the diversity of the state. At the time of the appointment, Judge Watkins was the first and only African American in the state to serve on the state or federal bench outside of Multnomah County.
Judge Watkins is a native Oregonian, a graduate of Wilson High School, and she was the first in her family to earn a college degree. Before her appointment to the bench, Judge Watkins spent 21 years as a trial lawyer.
Judge Watkins has drawn an opponent on the November ballot who, in his announcement, stated to the media that he was "running because Clackamas County wants a more traditional judge." Can I cuss now??? Judge Watkins is a smart, conscientious, and fair-minded person. If those are the qualities of a “traditional” judge, then one could not ask for anyone more “traditional” than her. We are lucky to have a person of her caliber on the bench.
At the event there will be wine/beer, hors d'oeuvres and a great opportunity to meet Judge Watkins and learn about her commitment to justice! Details are below.
Please RSVP to firstname.lastname@example.org.
