LO Adult Community Center to Host Talk on Cultural Appropriation

The Lake Oswego Adult Community Center will be holding a discussion on Cultural Appropriation on Jan. 16. Cultural appropriation is an especially hot topic during this time of year where holidays like Halloween and Thanksgiving often come with ethnic groups being reduced to suggestive costumes and histories of oppression either being obscured or outright ignored in the name of "tradition."

According to the LO ACC event description, "Issues of cultural appropriation and identity are complicated. Power dynamics influence who benefits from certain cultural experience, and given the global nature of our world parts of our individual and cultural identities are shaped by cultures other than our own. How do we make sense of this and what effect does it have on us as individuals and as Oregonians? Come to our open conversation hosted by Surabhi Mahajan."
